Jung’s Red Book points towards a prophetic “spirit of the depths” at the heart of astrology, and his life-work reveals a deep appreciation of its symbolism. His concept of “synchronicity” has become a taken-for-granted argument in our defense. James Hillman loved the subject, was guided by his horoscope, and offered potent insights into its imagery. However, before we may claim the allegiance of these pioneers in depth psychology, we need to address their pointed criticisms of our theories and practice.
Geoffrey Cornelius has a background in philosophy and divination, and is an astrological consultant and teacher. In 1983 he co-founded the Company of Astrologers with Maggie Hyde and other leading astrologers. He has a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Kent, and has actively promoted astrology in the academy. His books include The Moment of Astrology (Penguin Arkana 1994, revised edn. Wessex Astrologer 2003).
